Guarantee CO₂ logistics compliance through accurate measurement
After capture, the quality and volume of the CO₂ must be monitored as part of a custody transfer agreement between the emitter and the transport company. The purified CO₂ may be transported via pipelines rail, trucks and ships. While various transport stages occur, pipelines have been the most widely used mode for moving large volumes of dense phase CO₂. Once it reaches the final destination, the CO₂ is often stored in underground saline and rock formations, tanks and depleted oil and gas reservoirs. The quality and volume of CO₂ is verified again during the storage process to ensure agreed-upon values are met.
Flow metering system
Achieve accurate flow metering in dense phase CO₂
Measuring CO₂ flow in dense phase is crucial for long-distance pipeline transportation. In this phase, CO₂ has a viscosity similar to that of a gas, but a density closer to that of a liquid, making measurement challenging. Due to unusual variance in the thermophysical properties of CO₂ in this dense phase, special care must be taken to maintain the temperature and pressure. The custody transfer flow metering system comprises:
Coriolis mass flow meters providing dense phase CO₂ measurement
Complete high pressure metering skid (up to 250 bar). This includes the complete pipework, pipe fittings, valves and other associated process equipment rated to ASME CL 2500
Compliant custody transfer standards and approvals, with wetted part and laser-based analyzer for quality measurement
CO₂ quality assurance with TDLAS based moisture measurement
Proven technology for accurate and reliable measurement of H2O in natural gas, biomethane (RNG), carbon dioxide (CCUS), and hydrogen
Optical analysis
Protect your pipeline infrastructure from corrosion
Contaminants in captured CO₂ can lead to dangerous corrosion in steel pipelines. Excess hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), moisture (H₂O) and oxygen (O₂) all contribute to the formation of aggressive acids within the pipeline. Over time, the corrosion from these acids will cause leaks or structural failure of the piping. Optical-based gas analyzers that use TDLAS and QF technology offer these benefits:
H₂O and H₂S trace measurements in CO₂ backgrounds
High accuracy TDLAS technology ensures no on-site calibration is needed
O₂ measurement using optical QF technology has no interference from acid gases
Fast response with no moving parts or consumables
Reliable measurement with NIST-traceable factory calibration
Accurate and reliable O2 measurements for natural gas and gas processing applications
Level
Secure precise CO₂ liquid level measurement
CO₂, primarily transported as a liquid by marine vessels, presents unique challenges for storage and handling due to its low temperature and dielectric constant. Endress+Hauser's guided wave radar technology offers stable liquid level measurement, including the following benefits:
Patented end-of-probe evaluation algorithm and a coaxial probe ensure stable measurement
Results are unaffected by fluctuations in the process density and temperature
Maintenance-free design with no moving parts for safety and availability
For high temperature and high pressure applications in the oil & gas, chemical and power industry
Temperature
Prevent CO₂ phase change with temperature measurement
The phase diagram of carbon dioxide is comparable to that of water. At ambient conditions, CO₂ is a gas and liquefaction occurs only between the critical point and the triple point. Precise temperature measurement is vital to prevent phase changes during CO₂ storage and transport, optimizing safety and efficiency. Our instrumentation benefits include:
Second process barrier with failure indication offering valuable health status information
iTHERM QuickNeck: cost and time savings with a tool-free recalibration
